9 Cold-Weather Running Tips for Safe Winter Runs – SheKnows

I enjoy running – the exhilaration, the stress-busting endorphins, and the feeling of triumph. But even I struggle to get out and run in the cold. Having moved from California to the East Coast, I haven’t mustered the courage to go for a run yet. However, I acknowledge that running in the winter is doable and comes with its own benefits – like improving your mood during the winter blues. Here are some expert tips for running safely and making the most out of your chilly winter runs.

The first tip is to layer up. Having the right gear makes a huge difference in combatting the weather. Start with a snug, sweat-wicking base layer, followed by a mid-weight insulating layer, and finish with a breathable, water-resistant or water-repellant outer layer like a jacket. Long leggings are recommended for your legs.

Visibility is important, especially during shorter daylight hours, so invest in reflective running gear and a headlamp.

In cold weather, remember to protect your extremities – wear gloves or mittens, a warm and dry head covering, breathable socks, and something to cover your face. Additionally, invest in grippy shoes with ice spikes for traction on snowy or icy surfaces.

Finally, warm up inside before heading out into the cold and start slow to give your muscles time to get used to the weather. Choosing a safe route, staying hydrated, running with a buddy, and staying warm after your run are also important tips to keep in mind.

If all else fails, use a treadmill for a cozy cardio session without dealing with the elements.
