From the Desk of Beth Battaglino, RN, CEO, HealthyWomen

C. diff infection is a common and potentially deadly issue. The most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones is through education. Proper handwashing with soap and warm water is crucial in preventing the spread of the bacteria, as alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not effective. Knowledge is the first step in fighting C. diff infection.

C. diff refers to Clostridioides difficile, a bacteria that can cause colitis, leading to symptoms such as severe stomach pain, nausea, and persistent diarrhea. This infection can be life-threatening and may require hospitalization. There are nearly half a million cases and up to 30,000 deaths reported each year, making C. diff a significant public health concern.

As women, we play a crucial role in stopping the spread of C. diff due to our susceptibility to the infection and our position as healthcare decision-makers in our families. It is essential to educate ourselves on C. diff and how to prevent recurring infections.

Remember to seek medical attention if you experience symptoms such as severe belly pain, fever, persistent diarrhea, or blood in your stool. By spreading awareness and taking appropriate precautions, we can help combat C. diff infections.
