Navigating potentially difficult conversations during the holiday season can be a daunting prospect, especially when it comes to topics like politics, family conflicts, LGBTQ+ issues, body shaming, money, religion, and more. Therapist Lori Gordon-Michaeli, LCSW, suggests mental preparation and employing a metaphorical “Iron Man” suit to deflect any unnecessary confrontations during gatherings. She advises acknowledging differing opinions on topics such as politics and LGBTQ+ rights and firmly asserting boundaries when it comes to personal matters like weight and appearance.

When it comes to politics, Gordon-Michaeli recommends acknowledging that disagreement is natural in a democracy and refusing to engage in heated debates. For LGBTQ+ topics, a simple reminder of the importance of diversity and individual truth can help steer the conversation in a positive direction. In cases of family conflict, it may be best to follow the wise advice of “show up, shut up, and wear beige” to avoid getting sucked into unnecessary drama.

When it comes to sensitive topics like weight, appearance, and finances, Gordon-Michaeli encourages setting clear boundaries and enlisting the help of a supportive family member to act as a buffer. For discussions about religion and media bias, redirecting the conversation to a more positive and neutral topic can help diffuse any tension. And for those who may feel inclined to criticize a certain celebrity or relationship, it’s best to follow Taylor Swift’s sage advice and “shake it off.”

Ultimately, Gordon-Michaeli emphasizes the importance of maintaining boundaries and focusing on positive, inclusive, and respectful conversations to ensure a harmonious and drama-free holiday season.
