October 20, 2024, marks World Osteoporosis Day.

Don’t neglect your bone health, as it is crucial for overall well-being. Strong bones are essential for a healthy life. Osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones, affects millions of people, especially women. The physical and mental impact of osteoporosis can be significant and life-altering.

Research shows a strong link between osteoporosis and depression. People with osteoporosis are more likely to experience depression. On the other hand, depression can also increase the risk of osteoporosis. Factors such as hormone levels, lifestyle, and diet play a role in both conditions.

Prevention and self-care are key in managing osteoporosis. A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, along with weight-bearing exercises, can help maintain bone health. Quitting smoking, limiting alcohol intake, and taking prescribed medications are also important. Falls can be a significant risk factor, so it’s essential to safeguard your home and stay socially active.

Speak to healthcare providers about getting a bone density test and screening for depression. Taking control of your bone health now can prevent future complications and improve overall quality of life.
