PharmacyX Testing Electronic Prescription Software for Use in Wales
PharmacyX has been selected as the latest healthcare technology supplier to assist in delivering an electronic prescription service (EPS) in Wales. This initiative allows GPs and prescribers to electronically send prescriptions to a chosen pharmacy or dispenser, eliminating the need for paper-based prescriptions. In order to implement this digital service, IT systems in GP offices and community pharmacies must be able to securely send and receive electronic prescriptions. PharmacyX began the EPS assurance process in Wales in September 2024, with plans for live phases of assurance to begin in October 2024 and be completed by early 2025. Following successful completion of the assurance process, PharmacyX’s software may be rolled out to Welsh pharmacies using their system from early 2025. This step is crucial in modernizing healthcare services in primary care. PharmacyX joins other suppliers in making changes to support EPS in Wales, with the goal of making pharmacy operations more efficient for both staff and patients. The phased rollout of EPS in Wales continues as pharmacy software suppliers pass assurance testing and healthcare facilities prepare to utilize the new service. Patients in Rhyl were the first in Wales to experience electronic prescriptions in November 2023, and the EPS is now available at multiple healthcare locations across the country. With the increasing use of EPS technology, efforts are being made to ensure suppliers’ software is in compliance with Welsh standards, with support from various organizations including Life Sciences Hub Wales and Digital Health and Care Wales. The ultimate goal is to streamline the prescribing and dispensing process, making it safer and more efficient for all parties involved, while also reducing the environmental impact of paper-based prescriptions in Wales.
