WASHINGTON, September 18 — HealthyWomen, the leading nonprofit health resource for women, joined forces with prominent women leaders on Capitol Hill to advocate for comprehensive obesity care and improved coverage. The fly-in coincided with a House Ways & Means Committee hearing on chronic disease prevention, with obesity as a key focus.
HealthyWomen CEO, Beth Battaglino, RN-C, emphasized the need for better treatment options and coverage for obesity, highlighting that obesity is a chronic disease requiring a full continuum of care.
The coalition of women leaders, including representatives from various organizations, aims to modernize obesity policy and improve healthcare coverage. Nancy Glick from the National Consumers League stressed the importance of addressing obesity as a complex, chronic disease to break down barriers in the healthcare system.
The group seeks to drive tangible improvements in healthcare coverage, access to treatments, and overall care for individuals with obesity. With a mission to create a world where obesity is approached with comprehensive support and understanding, the leaders are advocating for empathy in the treatment of obesity.
Statistics show that women are disproportionately affected by obesity, with prevalence rates alarmingly high among different ethnic groups. The coalition’s goal is to ensure equitable access to evidence-based care and support for all individuals living with obesity, emphasizing the urgency of passing legislation like the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act.
