The Pain in My Neck Turned Out to Be Fibromyalgia

I was at the gym lifting weights when I felt a sharp pain in my neck. The fiery sensation took my breath away, but I tried to stay calm, thinking it was just a strain or pinched nerve. However, the pain only worsened as time went on. Despite surviving Y2K and being close to finishing my first year of medical school in 2000, the burning sensation persisted.

Countless healthcare providers couldn’t identify the issue, some even suggesting it was imagined or caused by depression. Exhausted and in pain, I took a leave of absence from school. Desperate for answers, a chiropractor diagnosed me with fibromyalgia, a term I had never heard before. Finally, I found relief in understanding my condition.

Researching fibromyalgia provided clarity, but also disappointment as medical treatments were scarce at the time. Determined to improve, I experimented with diet changes, stress management, and myofascial release therapy. This combination reduced my pain level significantly, allowing me to return to school.

Facing stigma from peers and instructors who doubted fibromyalgia, I eventually revealed my struggle in a presentation that moved many to share similar stories. Encouraged by the positive response, I dedicated my career to helping others with chronic pain conditions.

Now, in 2023, fibromyalgia is recognized and there are treatments available, though the complexity of the condition requires individualized approaches. I published a book on fibromyalgia treatment, inspired by my early struggles. Despite ongoing research, I remain hopeful that one day a cure will be found for fibromyalgia.
