How to Care for a Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

Are you interested in learning how to take care of a fiddle leaf fig tree? If so, you’re in the right place! I’m here to provide you with some helpful tips, including how often to water it, how much water to use, and how much sunlight it needs. Meet Frida Kahlo, our beautiful fiddle leaf fig plant that always receives compliments from visitors. I used to struggle with keeping plants alive, but I’ve finally found a routine that works. Today, I’m excited to share my tips with you!

A fiddle leaf fig tree, also known as a Ficus lyrata, is a tropical plant that is often seen on magazine covers, Instagram, and Pinterest. It can be a stunning addition to your home, but it also requires proper care to thrive. In this post, I’ll share tried-and-tested tips on how to care for a fiddle leaf fig tree, including watering, sunlight, and repotting. Let’s get started!

Proper Placement and Lighting Requirements

The key to keeping a fiddle leaf fig tree happy is to find the right spot in your home. Ideally, it should be placed in a north or south-facing window where it can receive plenty of sunlight. If your home lacks natural light, consider using a grow light to provide the necessary brightness. It’s important to avoid placing the plant near AC vents or in direct sunlight, as this can cause damage to the leaves.

Watering

When it comes to watering your fiddle leaf fig tree, the goal is to keep the soil consistently moist without overwatering. Many people use the “cup method” or water infrequently, but I’ve found that using a water meter is the most effective way to determine when to water. I only water the plant when the soil is dry and the moisture level reaches 2 or 3 on the meter. When watering, I thoroughly soak the soil with filtered water, making sure it drains from the bottom of the pot. Additionally, I recommend using rainwater if possible, as it can have a positive impact on the plant’s health.

Potting Medium

Before repotting your fiddle leaf fig tree, it’s important to allow it to acclimate to its new environment. When choosing potting soil, opt for a well-draining mix to prevent root rot. Additionally, be mindful of the pot size, as a slightly smaller pot can actually benefit the plant by encouraging healthy root growth. Ensure that the pot has a drainage hole, and consider using rocks at the bottom of the pot to facilitate water flow.

Fertilizing

If your fiddle leaf fig tree needs a boost, consider using a fertilizer mixed with filtered water. Fertilize the plant twice a year, during the summer and winter months. However, if the soil is healthy and the plant is thriving, fertilization may not be necessary.

Routine Maintenance

Misting the leaves and wiping off dust can help maintain a humid environment for your fiddle leaf fig tree. Additionally, gently shaking the trunk can encourage stronger growth. However, be cautious not to stress the plant with excessive handling.

Repotting

Only repot your fiddle leaf fig tree if absolutely necessary, as it can cause stress to the plant. Signs that repotting may be needed include the soil pulling away from the edges, a bacterial infection, or root rot. If repotting is necessary, trim any overgrown or mushy roots and provide fresh soil and water.
