Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCU) in Wales is partnering with Better to implement an electronic prescribing and medicines administration (ePMA) system.

Set to launch by March 2026, the Better Meds system will replace paper-based processes with digital workflows across over 40 hospital and community sites.

BCU aims to enhance medication management for more than 700,000 individuals in North Wales through this initiative. Mandy Jones, Deputy Executive Director of Nursing at BCU, highlighted the project’s role in the health board’s electronic health record strategy.

With a user-centered design approach, involving clinicians, nurses, and pharmacy staff, BCU is at the forefront of supporting the Digital Health and Care Wales digital medicines programme.

By leveraging timely access to patient information and reducing transcribing time, BCU anticipates improved patient safety and operational efficiency. Adrian Aggett, Client Director at Better UK & Ireland, reaffirmed the potential for substantial patient care enhancements and operational efficiencies through this strategic partnership.

Moreover, the transition away from paper processes aligns with BCU’s environmental sustainability goals. Notably, Wales is also making strides in digital healthcare, with plans to introduce electronic prescription services across all healthcare settings by 2024.

As healthcare organizations embrace digital transformation, BCU’s ePMA rollout represents a significant step towards modernizing healthcare delivery and enhancing patient outcomes.
