NHS England’s cyber security operations centre is currently investigating a cyber security incident at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The trust has confirmed that the incident, which occurred on 17 July 2024, was quickly detected and terminated.
Ed Prosser-Snelling, the chief digital information officer at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals, stated that initial consultations with regional and national teams suggest that no data has been compromised.
However, a comprehensive forensic investigation is ongoing, with the NHS England cyber incident response team providing support and guidance.
As an added precaution, enhanced security measures have been implemented to safeguard the trust’s systems, ensuring that hospital services continue without disruption.
An NHS England spokesperson has assured that patient care has not been impacted by the incident and that their cyber security operations centre is collaborating closely with the trust to address the situation.
This cyber attack follows recent incidents in the healthcare sector, including a ransomware attack on a pathology provider and a data breach at another health board in Scotland.
During a recent industry event, a cybersecurity expert warned of the increasing threat of cyber attacks on critical national infrastructure.
To strengthen protection, the government has proposed a new Cyber Security and Resilience Bill aimed at securing data supply chains for public services.
