Tallulah Willis recently shared her autism diagnosis in a heartfelt Instagram post, accompanied by a throwback video with her father. Surprisingly, she only discovered she had autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in 2023, at the age of 29, and is still navigating what this diagnosis means for her daily life. According to Willis, her heightened sensitivity to the five senses since childhood was a key indicator of her ASD. This sensitivity, along with other symptoms, vary widely among individuals with autism, as noted by Mayo Clinic.
Willis’s public acknowledgment of her diagnosis shed light on how ASD has influenced her behaviors, such as stimming, as seen in a childhood video. With a desire to raise awareness and provide support to women who are often misdiagnosed, Willis is stepping into her role as an advocate for ASD. She will be hosting Autism Speaks’ gala in October and is dedicated to increasing understanding and acceptance of ASD.
As Willis continues to explore the impact of autism on her life, her mission is to educate others about ASD, especially in the context of gender differences in diagnosis. With her platform, she hopes to empower individuals, particularly women, who may be undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with psychiatric conditions. Her commitment to advocacy is evident in her recent activities and initiatives in the autism community.
