We’re declaring it here and now: Summer 2024 is going down in history as the *official* Summer of Champions. Right here at Well+Good, we are giving major kudos to the incredible athletes, coaches, and stories revolving around the Paris Olympics and the U.S. Open tennis championships. Get ready to join us as we put the spotlight on everything from the fitness routines and self-care practices of today’s top athletes to the larger cultural conversations inspired by this summer’s epic events.
If there’s one team that reigns supreme when it comes to Olympic track and field, it’s Team USA. No other country has brought home more medals in this category, making the competition tough. Sanya Richards-Ross, a three-time Olympian and five-time Olympic medalist, knows firsthand the intense pressure these athletes face. During her professional running career, she dominated at 400 meters and still holds the title for the fastest American woman at this distance for 18 years. Since retiring in 2016, Richards-Ross has been keeping busy as an NBC sports analyst, book author, entrepreneur, and former Real Housewives of Atlanta cast member, all while raising two children.
Richards-Ross recently sat down with us during her broadcasting duties at the U.S. Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon, to chat about her current life and reflect on the lessons that have helped her look, feel, and perform her best in this new season.
1. Motivation wanes, discipline doesn’t: Even elite athletes struggle to find motivation to work out post-retirement. Richards-Ross found a new workout partner in her husband and a solid home gym to reignite her fitness drive. They focus on strength training, bodyweight exercises, and light cardio, creating a bonding experience that keeps their routine consistent.
2. Your body is your teammate—not your enemy: Richards-Ross has embraced the changes her body has gone through post-athletic career and views it as a partner, not a foe. Accepting and appreciating her body’s capabilities fuels her proactive approach to health and wellness.
3. Eating well is non-negotiable: Richards-Ross understands firsthand the power of good nutrition and hydration in boosting energy levels and overall well-being. Prioritizing proper nutrition and hydration has become a key component of her post-retirement routine.
4. Support is a team sport: Family support has been crucial to Richards-Ross’ success, from her athletic career to her business ventures. Strong relationships, whether with family, friends, or professional partners like Nike and NBC, have enriched her life and propelled her forward. The altruistic mindset she maintains not only benefits others but also enhances her own well-being.
Summer 2024 is shaping up to be a season for the history books, filled with champions and inspiring stories that remind us of the power of dedication, teamwork, and self-care.
