Reduce the Risk of Head and Neck Cancers

The United States sees a high incidence of common cancers such as breast, lung, colorectal, and melanoma. However, head and neck cancers, though less common, are just as serious and affect thousands globally. These cancers originate in the sinuses, nose, mouth, throat, and other areas. Risk factors include tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and HPV infection. Men and Black individuals are more susceptible. Early detection is key, but prevention is also possible. Here are 7 ways to lower your risk of head and neck cancers:

1. Don’t Smoke or Use Tobacco Products: Tobacco use is a major risk factor for head and neck cancers.

2. Limit Your Use of Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption can increase your risk.

3. Get the HPV Vaccine: HPV is a known risk factor for certain head and neck cancers.

4. Practice Proper Sun Protection: UV radiation exposure can lead to lip cancers on the head and neck.

5. Lower Exposure to Toxins in Occupational Settings: Certain occupations may expose you to toxins linked to head and neck cancers.

6. Schedule Annual Dental Visits for Routine Exams: Proper oral care is crucial for preventing mouth-related cancers.

7. Ask a Healthcare Professional About Screening: Early detection can improve survival rates.

Take proactive steps to reduce your risk of developing head and neck cancers. Early detection is key, and these preventive measures can make a significant difference in your overall health and well-being.
