Don’t be swayed by influencers – sunscreen is safe and crucial for protecting your skin from sun damage. Many believe that childhood sun exposure can lead to skin aging and cancer later in life. Make sure to apply sunscreen consistently to protect yourself and your children.

What sunscreen is best for kids? Is spray sunscreen OK? Should you use mineral or chemical sunscreen for kids? When and how much sunscreen should you apply? What if my child gets a sunburn?

What sunscreen is best for kids?

Choose a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection and an SPF of 30 or higher. The best sunscreen is one that you and your child will use consistently.

Is spray sunscreen OK?

While sprays are convenient, lotions are recommended over sprays for children due to the difficulty of knowing how much spray has been applied. If using spray, apply it to your hand first before applying it to your child.

Should you use mineral or chemical sunscreen for kids?

Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are recommended for children with sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens have come under scrutiny, but the risks are not definitive. The choice is yours.

When and how much sunscreen should you apply?

Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2 hours or after swimming. Use about 1 oz for adults and half of that for kids, making sure to cover all exposed areas.

What if my child gets a sunburn?

Sunburns can happen, but taking steps like applying cold compresses, giving extra fluids, and using soothing lotions can help. Consult a pediatrician if needed.
