The New York Liberty (WNBA) is setting the sports world on fire with their exciting games. Attending one of their home games guarantees not only good basketball but also the spirited dance performances of the Timeless Torches, an all-senior dance team. Check out their Instagram page here!
Senior Planet had the pleasure of chatting with Phyllis Spencer, age 59, a dancer and team captain of the Timeless Torches, about bringing excitement and energy to the WNBA with a dance troupe comprised of members aged 40 and above.
Before joining the Timeless Torches, Phyllis spent 25 years as a New York City police officer and has been teaching fitness classes at the YMCA for nearly two decades.
How did you end up joining the Timeless Torches?
When Phyllis heard about the auditions for the Timeless Torches, she knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Despite being over 50, she seized the moment by taking a day off to audition and became a Timeless Torch!

Any favorite memories from your time with the Torches?
One standout memory for Phyllis was performing a Tina Turner tribute where she got to play Tina herself. The experience was not only fun but also marked her first spotlight moment doing a split on stage.
It’s powerful to see older adults command such a large stage together. What is the significance of a dance team like the Torches being so visible?
