As we approach the first Presidential Debate of the year, let’s ponder on a crucial question – Would Healthy Women Create a Healthy Democracy?
Dr. Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, the 178th president of the AMA, prioritized addressing health care inequities during his tenure. Sharing a personal story about his son, he emphasized the importance of justice and equity in health care, especially focusing on disparities affecting Black women, men, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
Reflecting on recent developments in reproductive health access, Dr. Ehrenfeld highlighted the polarized political climate and the need to uphold patients’ and physicians’ rights in making healthcare decisions.
While women continue to play a significant role in the healthcare workforce, the landscape of patient care and access is evolving, with challenges in red states that impact women’s health choices. The upcoming Presidential debate in 2024 will likely address these critical issues, emphasizing the intersection of reproductive autonomy, democracy, and healthcare ethics.
John J. Patrick PhD reminds us of the democratic ideals that align with the values of healthcare professionals, underscoring the importance of civility, compassion, and loyalty in our society.
Mike Magee MD, a Medical Historian, sheds light on these interconnected issues and their implications for America’s healthcare system and democracy as a whole.
