For 42 years, I have been battling complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), which inflicts non-stop intense pain. Despite facing doctors who doubted and mistreated me, I managed my condition through holistic self-care practices. However, when diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018, I had to re-enter the Western healthcare system. Despite past experiences of doctors not considering my CRPS, I chose my own treatment options wisely. Opting for chemotherapy only, I faced criticism but prioritized quality of life. My tumor responded well to treatment, but after a recurrence, I faced a new battle with insurance and treatment decisions. Through perseverance and research, I found success with immunotherapy, ultimately curing my cancer. I regained trust in the medical system with a team that valued individualized care. By taking responsibility for my health and well-being, I have found strength in self-care practices and continue to pursue my passions. Looking ahead to a third cancer-free year, I remain committed to trusting myself and living life on my terms.
