The Scottish Government has recently pledged an additional £3.6 million investment towards its Hospital at Home initiative for older people in the upcoming year. This remote care scheme allows individuals to receive acute treatments at home, including intravenous drips and tests under the supervision of a consultant. With a total funding of over £15 million since its inception in 2020, the program has shown significant progress, surpassing targets in bed numbers and patient usage. Health Secretary Neil Gray emphasized the benefits of Hospital at Home, highlighting its role in promoting independence and reducing hospital stays. The initiative has proven to be a valuable resource in addressing delayed discharge numbers and alleviating pressure on hospital beds. This continued funding will further enhance access to Hospital at Home services, benefiting patients across Scotland. Additionally, NHS England has announced plans to expand virtual ward access, aiming to produce an operational framework in the near future. A recent evaluation highlighted the need to address underrepresentation of minority groups in patient cohorts utilizing virtual wards. The government’s continued commitment to improving remote care services reflects a broader effort to enhance healthcare accessibility for all individuals.
