Standard infusion pump software to go live at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital
Peter White, chief nursing information officer at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Trust, shared details with Digital Health News about an upcoming project focused on creating a standardized pediatric dataset for infusion pumps.
The trust plans to go live with the standard infusion profiles in summer 2024, with ongoing integration efforts to interface data from the pumps directly into Alder Hey’s Meditech electronic patient record (EPR).
BD, a global med tech firm, provides the pumps designed for administering medicines over a period exceeding five minutes. While currently used with weight-based dosing at Alder Hey since July 2023, the trust is implementing standard infusions for improved safety measures.
Beyond safety benefits, the standard infusions will enhance interoperability with other trusts and streamline the prescribing process within the EPR. The pumps, connected through BD’s interface software ACE, allow for real-time data monitoring and updates for improved incident response.
White emphasized that the standard infusions will optimize patient care, particularly for those in post-operative or critical care settings. The implementation aims to enhance medication reporting and streamline processes for medications with added risk factors, such as insulin or heparin.
As the trust progresses through validation processes and staff training, the standard infusion pump software is set to revolutionize medication administration and enhance patient safety at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
