After divorcing Jeff Bezos in 2019, MacKenzie Scott has been setting an example by generously donating to important causes. Her latest donation of a $2 million grant to the Birthing Beautiful Communities in Ohio has gone viral on X (formerly known as Twitter).
The Birthing Beautiful Communities is a doula program dedicated to supporting Black mothers, babies, and families. Jazmin Long, the President & CEO of BBC, expressed deep gratitude for Scott’s transformative gift, stating that it will empower them to expand their impact and further their mission of providing care and support to every mother, baby, and family.
With this funding, BBC aims to improve maternal health outcomes in Northeast Ohio and beyond, ensuring that every birth is a beautiful and healthy experience. The organization supports families by assisting mothers during pregnancy, labor, and the first year of the baby’s life.
Recent data from the CDC indicates that over 80 percent of maternal mortality deaths are preventable, with Black individuals being disproportionately affected. Factors such as lack of quality healthcare, structural racism, and implicit bias contribute to these disparities.
After receiving a $38 billion settlement from Bezos, MacKenzie Scott became the world’s richest woman. She has since donated over $650 million to various nonprofit groups, including those focused on maternal mortality, arts, education, affordable housing, and public health.
