Telehealth has transformed the healthcare landscape, but it also poses risks such as contributing to the overuse of antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance.
Antibiotics and the Risks
While antibiotics are vital in treating bacterial infections, overprescription and misuse can lead to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) where germs become resilient to treatment, causing serious health complications.
Increase in Telehealth and Antibiotic Prescriptions
The rise of telehealth during the pandemic has made healthcare more accessible, but studies show a higher rate of antibiotic prescriptions in virtual consultations compared to in-person visits, potentially leading to unnecessary antibiotic usage.
What Can We Do?
To combat antibiotic overuse, insurers, providers, and patients can play a role by promoting responsible prescribing practices, engaging in antimicrobial stewardship programs, and fostering open communication during telehealth appointments.
It is crucial for both providers and patients to be conscious of the necessity of antibiotics to ensure their effectiveness in combating infections.
