Cedarhurst Senior Living is committed to enhancing its memory care services with a focus on dementia care. Regional directors have taken charge of life enrichment departments and implemented a specialized training program based on dementia research. This intensive four-hour training program, approved by the Alzheimer’s Association, emphasizes evidence-based best practices in dementia care.

Director of Education and Engagement, Tara Powell, played a key role in developing and launching the training program. Over 400 employees have already completed the program and received certification from the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. This is complemented by a 90-hour training program focusing on engagement and support for residents with dementia.

The decision to expand memory care training was driven by demographic shifts in Cedarhurst communities, with older residents requiring higher acuity care. By tailoring programs to residents and integrating their life stories, Cedarhurst aims to provide personalized care and improve resident experiences.

Life enrichment teams have adjusted activity programs to include evidence-based practices like movement promotion and daily mantras to enhance emotional well-being. The holistic approach to care emphasizes fitness, therapeutic activities, and personalized attention to residents’ needs.

Future plans involve rolling out additional training across Cedarhurst communities and establishing person-centered care best practices. As resident acuity levels rise industry-wide, Cedarhurst is focused on addressing the unique needs of individuals living with dementia and providing tailored support and care.
