Two-time Grand Slam singles champion Stan Smith, 77, has led a remarkable life both on and off the tennis court. Beyond his sporting achievements, his humanitarian work brings him the greatest fulfillment. While some may only know him as the namesake of the iconic Adidas sneaker, Stan Smith’s legacy goes far beyond footwear. A towering figure at 6’4″, this Tennis Hall of Famer is now the subject of a documentary titled “Who Is Stan Smith?” Senior Planet had the opportunity to speak with the man himself:
Q: In your illustrious career, what is your most cherished memory?
STAN SMITH: So many moments stand out to me. Winning Wimbledon was incredibly special, especially after the heartbreak of losing in the finals the year before. But above all, the time spent with my wonderful family has been the most significant for me.
Q: Your documentary also explores your enduring marriage to Marjory Gengler. What do you believe has been the key to your happiness together?
STAN: Marjory’s understanding of the competitive nature of tennis, her heart for service, and our shared experiences have been crucial. We have been on the road together for much of our lives, and our time spent together continues to be incredibly precious.
Q: How do you spend your days now?
STAN: I run a company called Stan Smith Events, where we help entertain clients at major sporting events. Additionally, I am heavily involved in our tennis academy in Hilton Head Island. My goal is to instill a sense of gratitude in young people and encourage them to give back to those less fortunate.
Q: You have made a significant impact in the life of Mark Mathabane. How does it feel to see his success after helping him escape apartheid in South Africa?
STAN: It brings me immense pride to see what Mark has achieved with a little help and education. His accomplishments are truly extraordinary, and his dedication to academic and social success is inspirational.
Q: Do any of your children or grandchildren share your tennis talent?
STAN: Some of my grandchildren are showing promise in tennis, with aspirations to follow in my footsteps. However, I believe everyone has their own talents and passions to pursue.
Q: How do you stay fit besides playing tennis?
STAN: I prioritize daily exercise and a balanced diet to stay healthy. I do a mix of cardio, stretching, and core work, along with being mindful of what I eat and taking supplements.
Q: The Adidas Stan Smith sneakers have been a timeless classic. Do you still wear them?
STAN: I love wearing my Adidas Stan Smith sneakers, and I own over 100 pairs. It’s been fun to see them worn by people from all walks of life over the years.
Q: Who is your favorite tennis player today?
STAN: Carlos Alcaraz is currently my favorite player for his incredible skill set, joy for the game, and his ability to inspire fans with his passion on the court.
Q: What inspired your own documentary?
STAN: LeBron James’ production company approached me after reading my book, “Stan Smith: Some People Think I’m a Shoe”, and the rest is history. The documentary explores various aspects of my life, including my playing career, family, and humanitarian efforts.
Q: Any advice for fellow seniors on aging with grace?
STAN: Gratitude and giving back are key to a fulfilling life. Stay active both physically and mentally, and never stop pursuing your passions. Retirement is not a requirement if you love what you do and find joy in it.
