Ayesha Shand garnered attention in January for bravely sharing her battle with endometriosis on Instagram and undergoing surgery to address the condition. Three months post-procedure, Shand provided SheKnows with an update on her recovery journey at the Endometriosis Foundation of America’s Blossom Ball on May 3, where she served as co-chair.
According to Shand, the surgery was successful and her recovery progress has been positive. While there were some discomforts initially, Shand emphasized the importance of certain preparations and highlighted the improvement in mobility as time went on.
She further shared, “My first post-surgery period was challenging, but now I only need minimal pain relief compared to before.” Shand, the daughter of Camilla’s late brother Mark Shand, opened up about her battle with endometriosis in a heartfelt social media post earlier this year, detailing the excruciating symptoms and struggles she faced.
Endometriosis is a condition where uterine tissue grows outside the uterus, potentially causing fertility issues, ovarian cysts, bloating, and severe pain. It affects about 1 in 10 women globally, as per the World Health Organization, with many cases going undiagnosed.
Speaking at the Endometriosis Foundation event, Shand expressed her fatigue as the driving force behind sharing her diagnosis, joining other celebrities like Bindi Irwin, Padma Lakshmi, and Halsey in raising awareness about the condition. She highlighted her own struggles, emphasizing the need for more dialogue and understanding about endometriosis.
Reflecting on her journey post-surgery, Shand expressed how life-changing the procedure has been for her. She recounted a recent experience at UPenn’s Wharton School where she noticed a significant difference in her well-being. “For the first time, I wasn’t struggling in my classes,” she shared enthusiastically. “It was truly a transformative moment.”
