Invatech, a leading pharmacy system supplier, has been approved to launch its Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) technology across Wales after successfully completing live testing in the north of the country. This milestone makes Invatech the first community pharmacy system supplier ready for widespread use in Wales. The EPS allows GP surgeries to electronically send prescriptions to a patient’s chosen community pharmacy, eliminating the need for paper forms.
The launch of electronic prescriptions in Rhyl in November 2023, using EMIS Group’s GP system and Invatech’s Titan pharmacy system, marked the first use of this technology in Wales. Since then, patients in Conwy have also benefited from EPS, with prescriptions sent from Plas Menai Surgery to pharmacies in Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr.
Invatech CEO Tariq Muhammad expressed his joy at being the first EPS-approved system in Wales, highlighting the positive impact this will have on Titan customers and their patients. The approval and implementation of electronic prescribing have been supported by the Community Pharmacy System Innovation Fund, established by Life Sciences Hub (LSHW) and Digital Medicines on behalf of the Welsh Government.
Cari-Anne Quinn, LSHW’s chief executive, emphasized the significant progress in healthcare delivery services through technology, streamlining processes, improving patient care, and benefiting healthcare professionals and the environment. The EPS rollout in Wales is a pivotal component of the broader Digital Medicines initiative managed by Digital Health and Care Wales, expected to enhance the safety, efficiency, and ease of prescribing and dispensing medications for all involved.
