Following a national patient safety alert regarding Euroking’s maternity EPR and a June deadline to ensure configurations are safe, over a dozen NHS trusts have confirmed plans to move away from the system.
In December 2023, NHS England issued an alert after discovering a fault with the Euroking maternity EPR, supplied by Magentus Software. The alert highlighted safety risks related to technical issues in the system, including data overwrite that could mislead clinicians and compromise safety.
Despite no evidence of harm reported, trusts were urged to review if Euroking meets their maternity service needs and ensure safe configurations by June 2024.
Trusts Transition Away from Euroking
Euroking, also known as E3, is a commonly used maternity EPR. South Tees Hospitals Foundation Trust and Hillingdon Hospitals Foundation Trust have already switched to alternative systems. 13 of the 15 trusts using Euroking at the time of the alert are either in the process of transitioning to new providers or have completed the switch.
Trusts such as Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals Trust, Salisbury Foundation Trust, Bolton Foundation Trust, and Kent and Medway’s maternity service providers are procuring or implementing new systems. Others like Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals Foundation Trust, Stockport Foundation Trust, Tameside and Glossop Foundation Trust, and Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust are moving away as part of wider EPR implementations.
While working on new systems, trusts are collaborating with Euroking and integrated care boards to manage risks. Euroking has identified solutions to address the issues raised in the alert and is working with trusts to ensure compliance by the specified deadline.
