Kate Middleton made a significant announcement today, revealing that she has cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. In a heartfelt video shared by Kensington Palace, the Princess of Wales disclosed that following major abdominal surgery in January, cancer was discovered and she is now receiving preventative chemotherapy.
“At the time of the surgery, it was believed to be non-cancerous,” Kate explained in the video. However, post-operation tests revealed the presence of cancer. She further mentioned, “My medical team recommended a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I am currently in the initial stages of treatment.”
Kate did not disclose the specific type of cancer detected and expressed her privacy rights regarding medical information. A spokesperson informed the BBC, “We will not be sharing any further private medical information. The princess has a right to medical privacy as we all do.”
She did, however, share details about her current treatment plan. Preventative chemotherapy, also known as adjuvant therapy, involves using chemotherapy drugs to prevent cancer growth. It is often recommended for those at high risk of cancer or individuals looking to prevent cancer recurrence, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Adjuvant therapy is commonly used post-treatment for certain types of cancer like breast, colon, or lung cancer.
The duration of adjuvant therapy can vary, with some patients undergoing treatment for a few weeks and others for up to ten years, per Mayo Clinic. Chemotherapy can cause side effects such as fatigue, hair loss, nausea, vomiting, and infection. While it does not guarantee prevention of cancer recurrence, it can lower the risk significantly.
Considering the challenges of treatment, Kate has chosen to handle this phase in private. She mentioned in the video, “William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment.”
Kate also addressed her children, George, Charlotte, and Louis, about her health status, assuring them that she is improving each day. She expressed gratitude for Prince William and the unwavering love and support from their well-wishers.
In closing, Kate extended support to others grappling with cancer. “For everyone facing this disease, in any form, please do not lose faith or hope,” she encouraged. “You are not alone.”
