University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust Chooses Epic as Preferred Electronic Patient Record System Supplier

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust has officially selected Epic as its preferred supplier for an electronic patient record system. With a secondary care catchment of approximately 475,000 people and a wider peninsula population of nearly 2,000,000 individuals who can access specialist services, the trust made the decision after a thorough tender process and approval from its Board, as announced in a press release on its website. The final decision is contingent upon contract agreements and national approval of the Full Business Case.

Epic is already providing EPR systems to the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Additionally, the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust has also identified Epic as its preferred supplier, creating an opportunity for the three Acute Trusts in Devon to implement a seamless EPR solution that enhances operational efficiency and patient safety across the region, according to the press release.

The trust highlighted Epic’s successful collaborations with numerous NHS trusts, such as Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, emphasizing the company’s track record in delivering effective EPR solutions.

Simeon Brundell, consultant surgeon and the trust’s chief clinical information officer, expressed confidence in the EPR system driving improved service standards at the hospital. The new system will provide clinical staff with secure, real-time access to patient data, allowing for higher quality and safer care delivery. Patients will benefit from a more streamlined care experience, avoiding the need to repeatedly provide their medical history to different staff members.

Epic executive Leslie Selby noted that the trust will leverage convenient mobile access for patients and clinicians, incorporating advanced features like generative AI and machine learning to enhance outcomes and efficiency. The company looks forward to collaborating with the trust and its partners to transform care delivery for residents throughout Devon.

NHS England’s investment of £1.9 billion in NHS trusts aims to ensure a standard level of digitization and electronic patient record implementation across all healthcare facilities. By enabling health and care staff to access essential information efficiently, this initiative supports the delivery of care in a safe, effective, and standardized manner, ultimately improving outcomes for patients.
