Are you tired of the same old core workout routine? Crunches, planks, and mountain climbers can get repetitive and boring, leading to a lack of motivation. It’s time to mix things up with some unique core exercises that will challenge your muscles in new ways.
Strengthening your core has numerous benefits beyond just aesthetics, including improved posture, balance, and a healthy back, according to Harvard Medical School. But sticking to the same exercises can lead to a workout rut.
Adding variety to your routine not only makes your workout more enjoyable but also prevents muscle overuse and potential injuries. Trying new movements keeps your routine fresh, sparks creativity, and keeps you motivated to conquer any physical challenge.
Research shows that mixing up your exercises can help you reach your fitness goals more effectively. In a recent study published in Translational Behavioral Medicine, women who engaged in different types of activities were more likely to meet their exercise targets.
So, if you’re looking to spice up your core routine, here are five unique exercises recommended by Molly Thomas, CPT, to take your workout to the next level:
1. Copenhagen plank
- Lie on your left side and support your upper body on your left forearm, your left elbow stacked directly beneath your left shoulder.
- Stack your top foot on a low bench or step. Your bottom foot can start on the ground.
- Lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from head to heels. Hold this position while engaging your core and maintaining stability through your shoulders and hips.
- Progress to lifting your bottom foot off the ground.
- Hold for 30 to 45 seconds.
- Complete three sets on each side.
