For individuals living with dementia, as well as their loved ones, the impact of this condition can be overwhelming and have a significant effect on overall quality of life. This holds true for celebrities who are also living with dementia, as well as their families, friends, and caregivers. Notable figures such as Bruce Willis, Wendy Williams, and Mavis Leno have publicly shared their dementia diagnoses, shedding light on their personal struggles and raising awareness about this all-encompassing condition.

Dementia is a broad term that encompasses a group of symptoms affecting memory, reasoning, thinking, and social abilities, as described by Mayo Clinic. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which is a degenerative brain disease caused by complex changes following cell damage, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Other commonly diagnosed forms of dementia include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and Frontotemporal dementia. While genetic and age factors increase the risk of developing dementia, various other factors, such as depression, head trauma, inadequate diet and exercise, and low levels of certain vitamins and nutrients, also play a crucial role in determining an individual’s risk.

Symptoms of dementia include memory loss, difficulty with language, visual and spatial confusion, poor coordination, anxiety, depression, and more. Below, read about the experiences of celebrities living with dementia and their perspectives on how the diagnosis has impacted their cognitive and psychological health.

**Wendy Williams**
In May 2023, Wendy Williams’ care team announced that she had been diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia while filming her Lifetime docuseries. These conditions affect communication and brain function, respectively, leading to challenges in speaking, reading, and understanding speech. Williams’ diagnosis sheds light on the stigma and misunderstanding often faced by individuals with similar conditions.

**Bruce Willis**
In the spring of 2022, Bruce Willis’ family announced that he had been diagnosed with aphasia, which later progressed to frontotemporal dementia. This rare disease impacts cognitive abilities and can affect personality, behavior, and language. The family’s statement emphasized the need for increased awareness and research for this form of dementia.

**Mavis Leno**
Jay Leno recently obtained conservatorship of his wife, Mavis Leno, who is battling dementia. While specific details about Mavis’ condition were not disclosed, the conservatorship aims to ensure her needs are met. The couple of 44 years have maintained a supportive and loving relationship throughout this challenging time.

**Sharon Stone**
In 2001, Sharon Stone survived a life-threatening brain aneurysm that resulted in a brain bleed. As a result of her recovery, Stone experienced aphasia, a type of dementia affecting speech and communication. Through therapy and perseverance, Stone has become an advocate for stroke survivors and raises awareness about the challenges faced by women whose medical concerns are often dismissed.

**Robin Williams**
Before his death in 2014, Robin Williams was experiencing symptoms of Lewy body dementia, characterized by abnormal protein deposits in the brain. His misdiagnosis with Parkinson’s disease highlights the complexities of dementia diagnoses and the importance of accurate identification. Susan Schneider Williams, his widow, has since become a vocal advocate for dementia awareness in honor of her late husband.
