“A hero is someone who, in spite of weakness, doubt or not always knowing the answers, goes ahead and overcomes anyway.” – Christopher Reeve
Two years ago, 11-year-old Connor Fitz-Gerald became a hero when he saved 5-year-old Alyssa Bostic from a terrifying ordeal at Marina Dunes, California. Alyssa was buried alive under a collapsed sand cave, and Connor’s quick thinking and action saved her life. Connor dug her up, performed CPR, and resuscitated her before adult help arrived.
Alyssa, along with Connor and other kids, were digging large caves in the sand when a cave collapsed on her, leaving her unable to breathe. With no adults around, Connor acted swiftly, showing immense bravery and confidence. He learned CPR from watching TV and used his knowledge to save Alyssa’s life.
Alyssa’s recovery has been complete, and Connor’s heroism has not gone unnoticed. The Mayor of Marina, Bruce Delgado, plans to honor Connor at the next council meeting for his extraordinary bravery. This incident highlights the importance of teaching first aid skills to children, as it can make a life-saving difference in emergency situations.
Connor’s quick response and courage deserve to be celebrated, as he truly embodied the definition of a hero that Christopher Reeve spoke about.
