French pins

Pop quiz: How are you styling your hair lately? With my nine-month-old baby Emiliano pulling on everything, I’ve been opting for hairstyles that keep my hair out of reach.

Claw clips have been my go-to for the past year (Rachel Green vibes? Yes, please.). But recently, I’ve been drawn to photos of women rocking sleek buns and romantic twists, with the elegant curve of a French pin peeking out. Here are a few looks:

French pins twist

A polished twist, perfect for date nights.

French pins bun

A neat bun for casual days at home or entertaining friends.

French pins twist

This effortless, tousled twist with loose ends is reminiscent of Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise.

Inspired by the looks, I decided to try a twist myself. With my hair two days post-salon blowout, every strand stayed in place. For a sleek twist, blow dry and straighten any waves before styling. If you have layers and opt for air-dried hair, expect a tousled look with some layers poking out. Check out tutorials for both long and short hair.

How to Use a French Pin

Trying a top knot next, I learned that securing the pin above the bun tail and weaving it underneath ensures longevity. This technique anchors the bun in place. I found this TikTok video with step-by-step instructions really helpful.

To complete the look, let the pin show. The charm lies in showcasing the pretty pin at the top. Personally, I’m loving the hold of the Target pin and eyeing a trendy tortoise design as well.

Thoughts? Would you rock a French pin (or have you already)? I’m planning to sport these effortless updos all through fall.
