Having been a part of Grist for over seven years, I’ve witnessed its incredible evolution. From a Seattle-based entity to a fully distributed organization with presence in over 20 states, we’ve come a long way. Our journey from a blog to a prestigious digital magazine has been transformative. We’ve embraced novel forms of storytelling, like climate fiction, which we couldn’t have imagined when I joined in 2017.
During this time, we’ve onboarded numerous collaborators, expanded our syndication network, welcomed talented new team members, showcased the impactful work of our Grist 50 Fixers, and garnered a collection of prestigious awards. We strive not only to build upon Grist’s legacy but also to honor the legacies of our peers in non-profit media.
Almost four years ago, we acquired the archive of Pacific Standard, a publication we deeply admired, to ensure their exceptional work remains accessible to all. Recently, we brought Lyndsey Gilpin from Southerly to Grist, incorporating her expertise in environmental justice coverage and community engagement.
Today, we announce the acquisition of The Counter, a notable nonprofit publication focusing on food and agriculture. This acquisition marks a significant milestone in our commitment to quality journalism. The Counter’s work resonates with ours, and we are eager to build upon their legacy.
The expansion into food and agriculture reporting is timely, given the global threats posed by climate change on agriculture. The need for sustainable food practices is urgent, with the agrifood system alone contributing a third of all emissions. Our relaunch of The Counter within Grist will continue their insightful reporting on food systems, particularly at the intersection of climate and environmental issues.
