Reducing inflammation through lifestyle habits is a valuable goal, and one of the easiest ways to start is by giving your mind and body the chance to rest regularly, advises Maggie Berghoff, a functional medicine nurse practitioner and author of Eat to Treat. Mental and psychological stress and anxiety can trigger inflammation, which can be linked to various lifestyle factors such as foods. Berghoff suggests that stress reduction tactics are crucial for overall longevity and offers accessible, easy ways to stay mentally and physically calm.

The relationship between stress and inflammation is a two-way street, as stress can lead to inflammation in the body, and chronic inflammation may lead to poor mental health outcomes. Chronic inflammation can also trigger psychological stress, leading to a cycle of negative health effects. Research shows there’s a link between stress-related increases in C-reactive protein, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and depression.

To help keep inflammation at bay, Berghoff recommends making lifestyle changes, focusing on managing your sympathetic nervous system, and achieving a “stress less” mentality. Consuming nutrient-dense foods, practicing box breathing, and shifting your perspective to the bigger picture can assist in reducing stress and inflammation in the body.

In summary, taking steps to reduce psychological stress is an effective way to lower inflammation and promote overall well-being. By making simple lifestyle changes and managing stress effectively, it is possible to achieve a healthier, more balanced state of mind and body.
