After watching the Democratic National Convention and being inspired by Kamala Harris’s nomination acceptance speech, I am finding it hard to comprehend how the presidential race could be so neck-in-neck. It’s disheartening to think that there are such stark divides in our country on crucial issues like democracy, equal rights, fair elections, and basic decency. The resistance to a BIPOC woman becoming President is clear, especially from those at the peak of white male privilege and power. Despite this, the DNC has given me a renewed sense of hope for our nation.
Hope is a risky endeavor, as it opens us up to the possibility of disappointment. But I choose to embrace that risk, as true hope can ignite real change. As a physician with a commitment to public health, politics are no longer separate from my work. My background in fighting for women’s rights and against white supremacy aligns me with Kamala Harris’s vision for the country. By staying silent, we perpetuate violence and oppression.
The diversity and inclusion showcased at the DNC brought tears to my eyes, reminding me of the power of representation for marginalized communities. The optimism in the air is palpable, and I urge you to watch Kamala Harris’s speech and vote with your heart. Let’s work towards a future that embodies social justice, democracy, and equality. Let freedom ring.
