Why Does My Nose Run When I Exercise?

Have you ever experienced a runny nose during exercise? It’s a common occurrence, and here’s why. According to Dr. Michael Yong, during physical activity, the nasal passages tighten, causing mucus to become thinner and runnier. This can lead to dripping in the front of the nose or at the back of the throat.

If you find yourself constantly wiping your nose during workouts, there could be several reasons behind it. One common cause is allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever. This condition occurs when the immune system overreacts to environmental triggers like pollen, leading to a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes.

Another potential reason for a runny nose during exercise is nonallergic rhinitis, which is characterized by nerve sensitivity inside the nose. This sensitivity can be triggered by various factors such as weather changes, medications, or irritants like dust or fumes.

Structural issues like a deviated septum can also contribute to a runny nose during physical activity. In this case, the displacement of the nasal septum can cause congestion and mucus production.

While it’s normal for your nose to run during a workout, certain individuals, such as those with allergic rhinitis, nonallergic rhinitis, or a deviated septum, may be more prone to experiencing nasal drippage. Consulting with a healthcare provider can help determine the best course of action to manage this issue.
