A few years ago, The Hearty Soul shared an exciting story about a company crowdfunding to create biodegradable coffee cups that would plant trees when disposed of.

The company’s website describes the “World’s First Plantable Coffee Cup” as being made from renewable paper that contains specific plant seeds. As the paper breaks down, the seeds grow into trees. Each cup displays the state of origin of the seeds and provides planting instructions.

After receiving an overwhelming response, with 569 backers pledging over $21,000, the project known as Reduce.Reuse.Grow surpassed its original fundraising goal.

While the plantable coffee cup idea eventually evolved into Restoration Packaging, a company that offers compostable and recyclable packaging products, planting a tree for each item sold. Their products biodegrade within months in commercial compost, and they have partnered with major companies like 7Eleven to promote sustainability.

Restoration Packaging’s mission is to revolutionize the foodservice industry with environmentally friendly and community-focused products. They have planted over 8 million trees in Western USA and Canada, restoring wildlife habitats in areas affected by fires.

Although the original concept of plantable coffee cups may have faded away, Restoration Packaging’s impact has been substantial and continues to grow, promoting sustainability and environmental conservation.
