Most women often think of menopause as “the big change”, but there is another significant hormone shift that occurs up to 10 years before menopause called perimenopause. This phase can be unsettling for women in their 40s as it is not widely discussed. Aileen Wentraub, a mother and author, describes her experience:

“The symptoms of pregnancy are almost identical to the symptoms of perimenopause: weight gain, breast tenderness, spotting. I had them all.”

Wentraub found herself facing perimenopause symptoms in her early forties, unaware that such a phase even existed. She reflects on the challenges of being in the “sandwich generation”, taking care of both kids and parents, without much support for herself.

“Who is taking care of us while we navigate this new territory? Who is telling us that it is perfectly normal to drive halfway to work before realizing that we forgot to pop in our contacts?”

Perimenopausal women may experience various symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, menstrual irregularities, mood changes, and more. It is important to understand what perimenopause is and how to manage it effectively.

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional phase between pre-menopause and menopause when estrogen levels decline, leading to various physical and emotional changes. It can start in a woman’s 30s or 40s and last for several years. Symptoms include hot flashes, weight fluctuation, insomnia, and more.

How to Handle Perimenopause

While perimenopause is a natural phase, there are ways to alleviate its symptoms. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, omega-3 supplements, and mindful breathing can help manage hot flashes and mood swings. Consulting a healthcare provider for guidance and possible estrogen therapy can also be helpful.
