The Benefits of Coffee With Cocoa for Heart Health

Hands up if you can’t start your day without a cup of coffee! (*raises hand*) For many of us, coffee is a morning essential. It provides a much-needed energy boost and helps with alertness. Research from Johns Hopkins Medicine suggests that drinking one to two cups of coffee a day can lower the risk of heart disease and heart failure. Adding cocoa to your coffee can elevate its heart-healthy benefits even further. Here are three reasons your heart will thank you for starting your day with a cup of cocoa-powered java.

1. Coffee-drinkers may live longer than non-coffee drinkers
Studies show that moderate coffee consumption may improve longevity and heart health. A recent study in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that up to three cups of coffee per day can lower the risk of dying due to heart disease and stroke. However, it’s important to note that excessive coffee consumption can have negative effects.

2. Coffee-drinkers may have lower rates of heart disease and stroke
Research published in Circulation and PLOS Medicine suggests that moderate coffee consumption can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. However, adding excessive cream, sugar, or other flavorings to your coffee can cancel out the heart-healthy benefits.

3. Cocoa powder may reduce inflammation
Not only does coffee have heart-healthy benefits on its own, but adding cocoa can enhance those benefits even further. Cocoa powder contains flavanols, which have anti-inflammatory effects and can improve blood flow and blood sugar control. It’s important to use unsweetened cocoa powder in order to maximize its heart-healthy benefits.

When preparing your cocoa-powered coffee, it’s important to pay attention to serving size, skip the extra cream and sugar, and opt for organic coffee and cocoa powder when possible. Taking a walk and staying socially connected can also add to the heart-healthy benefits of your morning routine. Whether you enjoy your coffee with cocoa at home or at your favorite coffee shop, you can feel good knowing that you’re taking care of your heart.
