The 2024 Summer Olympics officially commence in Paris on July 26. Whether you’re tuning in for the inspiring sportsmanship or the Siene River gossip, this year’s Olympics promises to be both entertaining and safe for athletes at the Olympic Village. As athletes start settling in, social media is flooded with TikTok tours showcasing the quirky cardboard beds, mattresses made from recycled fishing nets, and the plentiful supply of Olympic-branded condoms found in each room.
In a TikTok video by Canadian sailor Sarah Douglas, athlete rooms are stocked with freebies like Olympic-themed luggage, Samsung Galaxy phones, and a colorful stack of condoms adorned with the official Paris Olympics and Paralympics mascots, the Phryges.
Each condom packet includes a message emphasizing consent and protection, such as “No need to be a gold medalist to wear it!” and “On the field of love, play fair. Ask for consent.” As more athletes arrive, new slogans are popping up, promoting safe practices like “Score a win: Yes to consent, no to STDs” and “Don’t share more than victory, protect yourself against STDs.”

While the Olympics’ “sexcapades” have become a topic of discussion over the years, the importance of protection is highlighted on this year’s condoms: “According to WHO, around 630,000 people died from HIV-related causes last year, and 1.3 million acquired HIV. Protect yourself, test yourself!”
Despite the informal “intimacy ban” at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where organizers tried to limit physical contact due to COVID-19, over 150,000 condoms were still provided to athletes. For the upcoming Paris Games, that number has nearly doubled, with an estimated 230,000 protection options available, including male condoms, female condoms, and oral dams.
While organizers don’t expect athletes to use their full condom quota, a steady supply will be available across the Village, ensuring safety and promoting responsible practices.
