When it comes to getting your hands on the latest tech products, how far would you go? Hopefully not as far as the teenager who sold his kidney on the black market to buy the newest Apple gadgets.
At just 17 years old, Wang Shangkun made a life-altering decision to undergo an illegal surgery and sell one of his kidneys for $4,000. With the money, he purchased an iPhone and an iPad, believing that he only needed one kidney to survive.
Unfortunately, shortly after the surgery, Wang experienced a decline in kidney function. Now, at 25, he is bedridden for life and relies on daily dialysis after his remaining kidney failed.
The illegal surgery led to renal deficiency and complications from unsanitary conditions during the operation. Allegedly, Wang had connected with kidney harvesters through the internet, and the procedure was performed by doctors from local hospitals.
Despite the tragic consequences, Wang’s family, who lived in poverty, could not afford the luxuries he desired. Nine people were arrested in connection with the case, and five, including the surgeons, were jailed. His family was later compensated with about $300,000.
