Approximately 15 minutes into my virtual tai chi session, a notification popped up on my laptop alerting me of an awaited email. The temptation was too strong, and I paused the exercise to check the message. Instantly, I regretted breaking the peaceful, stress-relieving flow I had been immersed in. But as I returned to the movements, I felt my heart rate slow and my shoulders relax once more. Determined to fully benefit from the practice, I ignored any further distractions for the remainder of the class.

Tai chi, an ancient practice, has been proven by modern exercise science to promote a longer, healthier life in various ways. According to Mike Ng, a tai chi master and doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, it goes beyond mere physical exercise to offer a holistic mind-body experience.

Originating as a martial art in ancient China, tai chi combines martial arts techniques with traditional Chinese philosophy, meditative breathing practices, and principles from Chinese medicine. Over time, it evolved into a gentle form of exercise that emphasizes relaxation over tension, promoting the circulation of energy (qi) throughout the body with slow, intentional movements.

As tai chi spread, different styles emerged from five primary traditions, each with its unique characteristics. From the original Chen style’s martial art roots to the gentle Sun style ideal for those with joint issues, practitioners can choose a style that resonates with them.

The benefits of tai chi are numerous, making it a compelling practice to try. It offers relaxation at both a physical and mental level, enhances balance, alleviates pain for conditions like low-back pain and arthritis, improves lung function, boosts cognitive function, and aids in better sleep.

For beginners looking to explore tai chi at home, simple movements like “ward off left and ward off right,” “brush the knee,” and “parting the wild horse’s mane” can help initiate the practice. Finding the right teacher who resonates with you is crucial to fully experiencing the energy and benefits of tai chi.

In conclusion, tai chi is a lifelong journey that can provide physical, mental, and spiritual benefits when practiced regularly and mindfully. Enjoy the process and have fun with it, as the rewards of tai chi extend beyond the physical realm.
