Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia are challenging conditions for both those affected and their loved ones. As the brain deteriorates, individuals with Dementia can become disoriented and anxious. However, research shows that memories of music remain intact even as other memories fade. Listening to music can activate the brain’s salience network, providing a sense of well-being and relaxation. Recent studies suggest that music therapy can have positive effects on Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients by engaging areas of the brain unaffected by the diseases. While not a cure, personalized music programs can improve mood, sleep patterns, social interaction, and overall quality of life for patients. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects and potential benefits of music therapy for Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients.
