We’ve all experienced stomach pain after eating at some point

Whether it’s a wave of extreme gas pain or a sudden urge to visit the bathroom, stomachaches can be quite common. While some stomachaches are easily explained by overeating or indulging in certain foods, others may leave you puzzled. Hector Gonzalez, MD, a gastroenterologist with Gastro Health in Plantation, Florida, explains that postprandial pain, or stomach pain after eating, can have a multitude of causes. By paying attention to your symptoms, you can learn more about what might be going on and how to address it.

Common Causes of Stomach Pain After Eating

  1. Overeating: Sometimes, the simplest explanation is the right one. If you feel general discomfort or pain in your stomach after a meal, it could be due to overeating. Typically, this discomfort subsides as your body digests the food.
  2. Indigestion: Stomach pain caused by trouble digesting food manifests as heartburn, bloating, or nausea in the upper abdomen. It can be triggered by specific foods or underlying conditions like acid reflux or food intolerances.
  3. Acid Reflux or GERD: When stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, symptoms like heartburn, chest pain, and regurgitation can occur. Common triggers include spicy foods, fatty foods, and certain beverages.
  4. Food Intolerance or Sensitivity: If you consistently experience stomachaches after consuming a particular food, you may have a food intolerance. This can lead to lower stomach pain, diarrhea, gas, and bloating.
  5. Celiac Disease: An inflammatory response to gluten, celiac disease can cause stomach pain, diarrhea, bloating, and gas after eating gluten-containing foods. It differs from gluten intolerance in its long-term effects on the GI tract.

Identifying the Problem

Various conditions, such as stomach infections, gastroparesis, ulcers, IBS, Crohn’s disease, and others, can also cause stomach pain after eating. Understanding the location and nature of your pain can help pinpoint the underlying issue. If you experience persistent or severe symptoms, it’s essential to seek medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment.
