A recent study conducted by Mamavation, a consumer advocacy group, has revealed alarming levels of PFAS “forever chemicals” in certain brands of condoms and lubricants. This discovery raises significant concerns about the safety of these commonly used products, especially in sensitive areas of the human body.
What Are PFAS and Why Are They Concerning?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals resistant to water, oil, and heat, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment and human body. Their presence in everyday items like cookware and cosmetics is well-documented, but their detection in sexual health products like condoms and lubricants is especially concerning due to high absorption rates in sensitive areas.
The Study’s Findings

In Mamavation’s study, 29 condoms and lubricants from 19 brands were tested, revealing that 14% of the products contained PFAS. Some products had organic fluorine levels above 10 parts per million (ppm), indicating PFAS presence. Notably, well-known brands like Trojan and KY Jelly had detectable levels of PFAS that may pose risks to consumers.
Health Risks of PFAS Exposure

PFAS are linked to cancer, liver damage, thyroid disease, and reproductive issues. The high absorption rates in genital areas increase exposure risks. Experts suggest immediate removal of PFAS from products to mitigate potential health hazards.
Potential Sources of Contamination

PFAS in condoms and lubricants may originate from latex, manufacturing processes, packaging, or lubricants. The presence of fluoropolymers like PTFE in these products adds complexity to identifying and removing PFAS.
The Call for Action

Experts urge the condom and lubricant industry to address PFAS contamination by conducting rigorous testing and eliminating these harmful chemicals. Consumers are advised to choose transparent brands committed to avoiding PFAS to ensure safe use of these products.
In conclusion, while condoms and lubricants play vital roles in sexual health, the presence of PFAS underscores the need for informed product choices. Heightened awareness and proactive measures can prevent exposure to these persistent chemicals in intimate products.
