Research shows that psilocybin, found in magic mushrooms, can provide long-lasting relief for cancer patients facing anxiety and depression. Two new studies published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology reveal that a single dose of psilocybin can reduce symptoms in up to 80% of patients with life-threatening cancers.
Patients diagnosed with depression or anxiety as a result of their condition experienced significant mood improvements after taking psilocybin. Remarkably, six months later, a majority of these patients continued to benefit from reduced symptoms, with some even showing signs of complete remission.
Another study found that both psilocybin and a placebo had immediate mood-enhancing effects on cancer patients, with the effects of psilocybin lasting up to six-and-a-half months. Previous research has also shown that psilocybin activates serotonin receptors in the brain, which may explain its anti-depressant effects.
These studies suggest that psilocybin therapy could revolutionize care for cancer patients experiencing psychological distress, with the potential to extend to other medical conditions in the future.
