How many times have you started a conversation with your friends or coworkers with, “OK, TMI but…” Let’s face it, no body function is off-limits and no question is too embarrassing to ask. But when you need answers without going to your bestie, we’ve got you covered. Let’s talk about period diarrhea—what causes it and how to deal with it.

Everyone mentions feeling moody before their period, but what about those gnarly period poops? Gut-related symptoms, including diarrhea, are part of the PMS package for nearly half of people with periods. But why does period diarrhea happen? It all comes down to hormone changes during your cycle, particularly prostaglandins, estrogen, and progesterone. These hormones can lead to changes in serotonin levels, affecting gut motility and potentially causing diarrhea.

While many people experience period diarrhea, those with chronic GI conditions may have more severe symptoms. Other common period symptoms include gas, bloating, nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, fatigue, and more. Period diarrhea usually lasts a couple of days and is related to the peak of prostaglandins when your period starts.

To manage period diarrhea, focus on your diet, stay hydrated, consider over-the-counter medications like Imodium, incorporate healthy habits like exercise and relaxation, and discuss hormonal birth control options with your doctor if needed. If symptoms are severe or affecting your quality of life, consult your gynecologist to rule out any underlying GI conditions.

In conclusion, period diarrhea is normal but can be managed with the right approach. Remember, you can always seek medical advice if necessary.
