If you have psoriasis, you may feel like you would do anything to relieve that constant itch. Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that occurs when skin cells multiply too quickly, resulting in thick, scaly patches called plaques. The itchiness can be particularly bothersome in the morning when you first wake up. Establishing a morning routine for psoriasis can be essential in managing the condition.

In addition to itching, psoriasis can cause other uncomfortable symptoms such as skin and joint pain, nail problems, or inflammation, depending on the type, according to the Mayo Clinic. While there is no cure for psoriasis, there are various treatments available, including topical treatments, oral medications, and other therapies, to help reduce flare-ups. Home remedies can also be beneficial.

“Establishing a morning routine is a great way to form healthy habits for managing psoriasis,” says Y. Claire Chang, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. Consistency is key in treating psoriasis, as it requires self-care to help you feel your best. Here are some tips for managing your psoriasis with a healthy morning routine:

1. **Shower:** Taking a shower in the morning can be beneficial for hydrating the skin and softening psoriatic plaques. Use lukewarm water and gentle, unscented soaps to avoid drying out the skin. Applying products immediately to damp skin after showering can enhance absorption.

2. **Moisturize:** Moisturizers are essential for delivering hydration to the skin and protecting the skin barrier, especially for those with psoriasis. Look for products with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, colloidal oatmeal, aloe vera, niacinamide, urea, or salicylic acid to help soothe and soften the skin.

3. **Apply SPF:** Sunscreen is crucial in protecting the skin from sun damage, especially for individuals with psoriasis. Broad-spectrum sunscreens with mineral UV blockers are recommended to minimize the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

4. **Get sunlight:** Controlled exposure to sunlight can have anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce inflammation associated with psoriasis. Start with short sessions of five to 10 minutes daily, gradually increasing to 15 to 20 minutes per day. Always wear sunscreen.

5. **Omega-3s:** Incorporating omega-3 fatty acids into your diet can also be beneficial for managing psoriasis, as it is a multifactorial disease.

By incorporating these healthy habits into your morning routine, you can help manage your psoriasis and improve your overall skin health.
