For years, Maxine Bédat, the executive director of the New Standard Institute, has been at the forefront of the movement to transform the fashion industry, advocating for sustainable and ethical practices. As a driving force behind the Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act (S7428A), also known as the New York “Fashion Act,” Bédat has been instrumental in pushing for legislation that would require apparel and footwear companies to disclose their environmental and social impacts, set science-based targets on carbon emissions, conduct human rights due diligence in their supply chain, and address water pollution issues caused by harmful chemicals and dyes. Currently, the fashion industry is responsible for 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with projections indicating a potential surge to 26% by 2050 if no action is taken. Bédat’s work has drawn support from over 80 legislators, but she remains dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for greater accountability within the industry. Through her research and engagement with stakeholders throughout the fashion supply chain, Bédat has paved the way for meaningful change, and is hopeful for a future where sensible regulations, brand accountability, and consumer behavior align to create a more sustainable and equitable fashion industry.
