In a patient Greek style, after seven years of delays, Greece has finally legalized medical-grade cannabis, a development that Zorba would be proud of. Patients will now be able to obtain licenses for medical cannabis in cases where it has proven effective for chemotherapy relief, HIV or hepatitis C therapy, chronic pain, MS, and palliative care to aid with appetite.
The Greek market is projected to reach about $330 million USD, offering new opportunities for grow operations to begin. The first medical-grade cannabis plant opened in January in Examilia, Corinth, as part of an investment from Tikun Europe, a subsidiary of Tikun Olam from Israel.
“A new era is dawning for our country with the establishment of our Tikun Europe facility, positioning Greece as a major player in the production and export of medical cannabis products,” commented Greek Development and Investments Minister Adonis Georgiadis. The Greek facility aims to become an export hub for all of Europe, reviving Greece’s agricultural industry and the pharmaceutical business sector.
Medical cannabis represents a significant investment for Greece, as it anticipates a growing market worldwide. Two additional production facilities for medical cannabis, backed by investors from Europe and North America, are planned in different locations across Greece.
